Dhiraagu Launches 5G Network Across Male and Hulhumale
5G Era Begins in Maldives
Dhiraagu, the Maldives leading telecommunications provider, officially switched on its 5G network covering Male City and Hulhumale today, delivering download speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second — approximately 20 times faster than existing 4G LTE speeds.
The launch makes the Maldives one of the first countries in South Asia to achieve widespread 5G coverage in its major urban centers. Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed said the company has invested over MVR 450 million in network infrastructure over the past three years to make this possible.
Compatible 5G devices will automatically connect to the new network without any plan changes required for existing customers. New 5G-specific plans offering unlimited data at higher speeds will be available starting next month.
Dhiraagu has committed to extending 5G coverage to all 26 inhabited atolls by the end of 2026 through a combination of terrestrial networks and satellite backhaul technology.
