IGMH Introduces Robotic Surgery Unit, First in Indian Ocean Region
Cutting-Edge Medical Technology
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has made a giant leap for healthcare in the Maldives with the inauguration of its robotic surgery unit today, featuring two state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical Systems that allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with extraordinary precision.
The MVR 120 million investment means patients who previously had to travel abroad for complex surgeries in areas such as urology, gynecology, colorectal surgery, and cardiac procedures can now receive treatment at home. Hospital Director Dr. Faisal Saeed said the unit is expected to perform over 400 robotic surgeries in its first year.
Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Naseem called the development a "game changer" for Maldivian healthcare, noting that the country spends over MVR 300 million annually on medical referrals abroad — a figure the new unit is expected to significantly reduce.
