Historic Win for Maldivian Cinema

The Maldivian film "Rasmathee" (The Longing) has made history by winning the Best Picture award at the prestigious South Asian International Film Festival held in Mumbai, India — the first Maldivian film to ever win a major award at an international film festival.

Directed by Ahmed Shiham and starring Mariyam Majdha and Ibrahim Jihad in lead roles, the film tells the story of a young woman from a remote atoll who navigates the tension between her traditional upbringing and her dreams of becoming a marine biologist.

The film was shot over 14 months across five Maldivian atolls and features breathtaking underwater cinematography. It was produced on a budget of MVR 6 million — modest by international standards but the largest ever for a Maldivian production.

Director Shiham said the award "belongs to every Maldivian who has ever felt the pull of the ocean and the weight of tradition."
