Major Infrastructure Development

The Male City Council convened an emergency session yesterday and unanimously approved a new road development plan worth MVR 450 million. The plan includes widening of key arterial roads, installation of modern traffic signals, and construction of two new pedestrian overpasses in the busiest parts of the city.

Council Chairman Ahmed Shareef stated that the project will begin in early 2025 and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The development aims to ease the severe traffic congestion that Male residents face on a daily basis.

Key Highlights of the Plan

The plan includes resurfacing of over 40 roads across the city, installation of 120 new streetlights powered by solar energy, and creation of dedicated bicycle lanes along the waterfront area. Additionally, three new parking facilities will be constructed to accommodate the growing number of vehicles.

Residents have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing hope that the project will be completed on schedule unlike previous infrastructure projects that faced delays.
